Richard Gowans is President and Principal Metallurgist of Micon International Limited, mineral industry consultants, a position he has held for the past 10 of his 20 years of working at Micon. Micon is a mining industry consulting company with its head office based in Toronto and secondary offices in Vancouver, Canada, as well as Norwich and Cornwall, UK and with representatives in Russia and the United States.
Richard’s experience in the mining industry has spanned 35 years since his graduation from the University of Birmingham, UK in 1980, with an honours degree in Minerals Engineering. His career started in the South African platinum mining operations in 1981, before moving into consulting with LTA in Johannesburg (now Aveng Grinaker LTA), Kilborn in Toronto (now SNC-Lavalin) and Micon, which he joined in 1998.
Richard has gained experience in the operation and design of mineral processing and hydrometallurgical plants for a wide variety of minerals and metals. He has been involved in operations, management, detailed engineering and commissioning of a broad range of types and sizes of processing facilities. Throughout his career he has also worked on and managed a wide assortment of feasibility studies, technical audits, and due diligence assignments on international industrial mineral, precious and base metal projects. His project experience includes leading independent multi-disciplinary due diligence technical teams in support of project debt and equity financing, and mergers and acquisitions. Recent assignments have included gold, copper, lead/zinc, nickel and specialty metals and minerals products, such as cobalt and lithium, that are the focus of M.Plan International Limited, established in 2016 as a joint-venture with Anzaplan of Germany.
